{"id":2284,"date":"2017-09-15T01:08:43","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T15:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cyclingclassics.com.au\/bowral\/2017\/09\/15\/david-heatley-hill-climbing\/"},"modified":"2017-09-15T01:08:43","modified_gmt":"2017-09-14T15:08:43","slug":"david-heatley-hill-climbing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyclingclassics.com.au\/bowral\/2017\/09\/15\/david-heatley-hill-climbing\/","title":{"rendered":"Training Talk: David Heatley On Faster Hill Climbing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Just 5-weeks out from the 2017 Bowral Classic, David Heatley of Cycling-Inform, the event&#8217;s official training partner, has penned this informative article on ways to improve your hill climbing.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>This is obviously a critical aspect of the sport and an important skill to master given the undulating nature of the Bowral Classic course &#8211; particularly those challenging &#8216;bergs&#8217; along the way.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are often asked\u00a0the question, how can I ride faster up climbs?<\/p>\n<p>Some may remember me talking about\u00a0about preparing yourself for you to ride faster up climbs? Remembering there is not one Holy Grail thing that will make you a better climber. A lot of people think this \u2013 \u201cThat if I do this one thing, it\u2019s going to make a big huge difference and I\u2019ll be climbing hills faster\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not about that; it\u2019s about integrating a whole lot of training techniques together to get your hill climbing happening for you so you can climb hills faster.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Cycling Training Tips - How Do I Train To Climb Hills Faster\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rXCm45vns_E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 data-fontsize=\"23\" data-lineheight=\"34\">Set your goal<\/h2>\n<p>Remember the steps that I talked about, you want to set yourself a goal \u2013 \u201cI want to climb this hill faster on this climb, by this day and by this much faster\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a hill in Melbourne that is very popular; the 1 in 20.<\/p>\n<p>Say you want to do the 1 in 20 in 17 minutes. Or you want to do it in 20 minutes, or you want to do it in 25 minutes. And \u2013 You want to do it in 5 weeks time.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing you want to do is go out and do that climb. You want to figure out what are you doing it at the moment? Say you are doing it at 22 minutes. Then you set a new realistic target based on that time, with a time frame that you want to achieve it by.<\/p>\n<p>Do you think you can take 2 minutes off it in 6 weeks? If you do then set the goal.<\/p>\n<p>The important thing is to understand where you are at the moment and where you want to be in a certain time. The \u201cwhere you want to be\u201d is your goal.<\/p>\n<p>You may find that your goal could be a little bit too aggressive for you. You may have a goal that is going to take 12 months to achieve. Like \u201cI want to take 5 \u00a0minutes off my climb for the 1 in 20\u201d. So if this is the case you can still set another goal, say in 4 weeks times where you are climbing the hill a minute faster. Now that\u2019s fairly achievable.<\/p>\n<h2 data-fontsize=\"23\" data-lineheight=\"34\">Build a program based on building aerobic base, strength then speed<\/h2>\n<p>Then you want to put together a program based around building strength and working on an awesome base. Then you build speed on top of that so that at the end of the time frame you have you are climbing hills faster.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, do some on the bike strength training, some low cadence work to build strength on the bike and some <a href=\"https:\/\/mattbrindle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strength training off the bike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve given you a few examples of some of the low cadence stuff that we do and some of those PDF\u2019s I showed you [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cycling-inform.com\/\">in our training centre<\/a>].
