There are few stories more inspirational than Bowral Classic Ambassador Emily Watts.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The up and coming cyclist was making her mark on the national road stage before a major accident landed her in a brace for three months. Now, a year on, the 21-year old is back racing and determined to make her mark.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We sat down with Emily to chat about her career, her comeback and learn how to seriously prep for a Gran Fondo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bowral Classic: Thanks for joining us today Emily. We might start by asking how you got into cycling?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Watts: <\/strong><\/span>So\u00a0I got into official racing when I was in Under 15s. I came from a\u00a0triathlon\u00a0background, I had run from when I was\u00a0little, ran triathlons and\u00a0then\u00a0made my first state team. My coach then encouraged me to join my local\u00a0club\u00a0so I did that and then they sucked me in to doing racing and in my third race I managed to qualify for\u00a0Nationals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During that I managed to\u00a0get a medal in the time trial so from then\u00a0on\u00a0I was pretty much hooked onto cycling. I then went to track cycling, went to\u00a0Nationals for that as well\u00a0and I\u2019ve just been riding bikes for about four years now.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC: Wow, talk about a meteoric rise.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>What does your cycling schedule consist of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0these days<\/span><\/span>?<\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

EW:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0M<\/span><\/span>y year has a lot of\u00a0National Road Series\u00a0races so that\u2019s\u00a0all over the country, without\u00a0Coronavirus\u00a0I was going to go to\u00a0Belgium which was going to be exciting but the\u00a0possibility\u00a0of maybe going to New Zealand at the end of the year is still on the cards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC: Last year you had a horrific crash<\/b>. How did you handle that?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EW:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Everyone has their cycling crashes.\u00a0I fractured six\u00a0vertebrae\u00a0and my collarbone\u00a0which left me in a body brace and a neck brace for three months.\u00a0So\u00a0I overcame that and I\u2019m actually at a better fitness level than before.\u00a0I spoke to a lot of people about it and I wouldn\u2019t say it was the best thing that ever happened to me but I\u2019m grateful\u00a0for the person that has come out of it, who appreciates everything so much more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>What was rehab like?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EW:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It was very steady in a\u00a0way\u00a0but my dad was crucial in my rehab. He was\u00a0really keen\u00a0to find any way\u00a0possible\u00a0for me to exercise\u00a0so I was walking 5km twice a day with my mum and dad and they used that as\u00a0a\u00a0competition to see who could walk faster with me.\u00a0I then\u00a0went back on the stationary trainer with something my dad made that meant I could hold on and be able to stay upright while I was on the bike\u00a0and that was\u00a0about\u00a0a month after the accident.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I managed to get a third place in my first race back in January in Ballarat so it has all been worth it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC: Moving onto something a little more light-hearted. Do you have any prep tips for our Bowral Classic riders, especially those doing their first\u00a0<\/b>Gran Fondo?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EW:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>My advice would be to gradually step up from where you are [fitness-wise] to\u00a0long-distance rides. Practice different speeds as well as elevations and within those rides trying out different nutritional\u00a0strategies, when to eat and when to drink. I think that the most important thing in a Gran Fondo is not to eat when you get hungry, you should have already eaten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC: Lastly. What\u2019s your go-to snack?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EW:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I have\u00a0recently\u00a0found a recipe for pumpkin waffles and I love them with nut butter!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
