Founder James\u00a0Yaffa\u00a0looks back on past climbs and ahead to the\u00a0challenge Mt Gibraltar will provide.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Having spent a good majority of my childhood in the back streets of\u00a0Kangaloon, I thought our local climbs had it all. These days the local\u00a0Kangaloon\u00a0Hills are rightly known as\u00a0\u2018Cardiac 1&amp;2\u2019. Both sides are legitimate leg and lung burners.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The 2016 Bowral Classic King\/Queen of the Mountain\u00a0(Cardiac 2) was a 6.1km climb at 2.1% average gradient. <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>David Evans<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Megan Scott<\/strong><\/span> had the honour of setting the first ever records.\u00a0This\u00a0was,\u00a0in my view,\u00a0the\u00a0gentler\u00a0of the\u00a0Cardiacs\u00a0going anti clockwise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9270 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingclassics.com.au\/bowral\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/Bowral-2019-2263-1-scaled-768x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" \/>In\u00a02017\u00a0we\u00a0decided to up the ante and take riders up Cardiac 2\u00a0(clockwise\u00a0this time) known as\u00a0Kangaloon\u00a0Climb\u00a0on\u00a0Strava. At\u00a02.19km at 4% average gradient,\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0much steeper incline and didn\u2019t that hurt\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Chris Miller<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Megan Scott<\/strong><\/span> (once again)!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">One of the reasons we changed the course in 2018 and 2019 was to introduce riders to the infamous Oxley Hill, positioned smack bang in the middle of Bowral. Aside from a complete course change in 2018, we thought it was the right time to unleash the beast of Oxley!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Whilst only a 1.2km climb at 10.5% vertical,\u00a0Oxley Hill was always on my wish list for\u00a0the Bowral Classic. Not only is it well respected by the strong local riding community it is an absolute weapon of a pinch and we did want to break up the bunches. Well let\u2019s just say it blew up the bunches and in my personal view is one of the sharpest lung rattlers going around.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9271 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingclassics.com.au\/bowral\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/Bowral-2019-2204-2-scaled-768x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"344\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"><br \/>\nSeeing our riders pass through the Bianchi\u00a0Arch was one of sheer joy, if that\u2019s what you call it! The difference with Oxley in 2018 v\u00a0Kangaloon\u00a0Cardiac is that they meet you at two very different stages of the course.\u00a0Kangaloon\u00a0was at\u00a0the back end\u00a0whilst\u00a0Oxley was smack bang in the middle.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Angus Calder<\/strong>\/<strong>Holly Khan<\/strong><\/span> and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Jay Vine<\/strong>\/<strong>Matilda Raynolds<\/strong><\/span> saw their names engraved into the honour board for 2018 and \u201819 respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><b>Enter Mount Gibraltar<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Make no mistake this climb will be epic and it is very different to our previous editions!\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;ve ridden each of the King\/Queen of the Mountain stages and honestly believe this one will be more than a challenge as it meets you roughly 2km to the end of timing! A true hill climb finish like the European Classics!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Mt Gibraltar is truly legendary amongst the locals, a 150-million-year old absolute beauty! The mountain locally is known as\u00a0\u2018The Gib\u2019\u00a0and is in the form of a ridge\u00a0rather than a traditional peak.\u00a0Situated\u00a0863m above sea level\u00a0it is said you can see it from\u00a0Echo Point in\u00a0Katoomba on a clear day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/routes\/26224053\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9276 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingclassics.com.au\/bowral\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/KOM-2-768x501.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"535\" height=\"349\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/routes\/26224053\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9275 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingclassics.com.au\/bowral\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/05\/KOM-stats-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"148\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/routes\/26224053\">Check out the King\/Queen of the Mountain on Strava!<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">As riders start the climb the first thing you will notice is that you are riding through the residential streets of this stunning area\u00a0and we have no doubt the locals will be out cheering you on!
