Owain Matthews is a\u00a0British-born runner turned triathlete who has joined our\u00a0crew of ambassadors for this year\u2019s Bowral Classic!\u00a0The talented\u00a0athlete\u00a0has seen success all over the world in his sporting career,\u00a0growing up\u00a0in the United Kingdom\u00a0where his running\u00a0achievements\u00a0even\u00a0earnt\u00a0him a scholarship to attend college in\u00a0the\u00a0United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now\u00a0he finds himself\u00a0here in Australia\u00a0coaching triathletes and\u00a0continuing his success by\u00a0collecting\u00a0a number of\u00a0accolades,\u00a0including the\u00a02018 ITU standard distance age group\u00a0title.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u00a0had\u00a0a chat with the\u00a0multi-talented Owain\u00a0and got to know him a little\u00a0bit\u00a0better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bowral Classic:\u00a0<\/b>Hi Owain, thank you so much for having a chat with us!\u00a0<\/b>Let’s start with your background<\/b>, how\u00a0<\/b>did\u00a0<\/b>you g<\/b>et<\/b>\u00a0into cycling and how long\u00a0<\/b>hav<\/b>e\u00a0<\/b>you\u00a0<\/b>been doing it for?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Owain Matthews:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I really got into cycling when I moved to Australia, in the back end of 2011,\u00a0early 2012. That is\u00a0when I started triathlons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>I thought I could hear a bit of an accent<\/b>, where<\/b>\u00a0are you from?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OM:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I\u2019m\u00a0from the UK originally, then I went to the US for college, and then back to the UK\u00a0before moving\u00a0to Australia. I\u00a0have always been a runner. When I moved\u00a0to Australia\u00a0there\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0many running clubs,\u00a0but there was a triathlon club.\u00a0It\u00a0started\u00a0with\u00a0triathlons but then\u00a0I\u00a0met a lot of road cyclists and really enjoyed that side of it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>Awesome, where did you go to college in the US?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OM:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I was at the\u00a0University of Oklahoma, I was there on a running scholarship,\u00a0and\u00a0that was great.\u00a0I\u00a0got to travel and run!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>What\u00a0<\/b>do you enjoy most about cycling? Why do you do it?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OM:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>There are\u00a0probably two reasons, the first is the social\u00a0aspect\u00a0because I find with running,\u00a0and even with triathlons,\u00a0a lot of the training is quite isolated.\u00a0One of the greatest things about cycling is going out in groups.\u00a0It is\u00a0such a social platform for me, and I really enjoy that interaction of enjoying cycling with others.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second thing\u00a0I enjoy\u00a0about it is the freedom of being outside and exploring, unlike running you\u00a0can\u00a0only\u00a0get\u00a0so far.\u00a0With cycling\u00a0you\u00a0end up\u00a0going\u00a0to all these\u00a0different\u00a0places,\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0have seen half the places that I\u00a0have\u00a0in Australia without cycling.\u00a0Especially around Sydney there\u00a0are\u00a0some beautiful\u00a0routes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>That\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0amazing!<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>Y<\/b>ou\u2019ve<\/b>\u00a0mentioned that you do triathlons, do you do any other sort of training? What would a typical training week look like for you?\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OM:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0train twice a day every day, I\u00a0have to\u00a0fit that around my kids and my job so I\u2019m\u00a0up\u00a0early in the morning training and then\u00a0again\u00a0in the evening.\u00a0I\u00a0also\u00a0have to\u00a0mix that between swimming, cycling and running as well as some strength and conditioning that I do.\u00a0It\u00a0takes a\u00a0bit of organising, but\u00a0I like\u00a0the mix.\u00a0Then in terms of riding I probably spend half the week doing some specific triathlon\u00a0training\u00a0and then there\u2019s times where I get to go and do group rides as well,\u00a0which is\u00a0really good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>I<\/b>magine\u00a0<\/b>you\u2019ve<\/b>\u00a0just been out on a big ride<\/b>\u00a0or had a big training session<\/b>, what would\u00a0<\/b>your<\/b>\u00a0go<\/b>–<\/b>to meal<\/b>\u00a0be?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OM:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Well anything I have is going to have a coffee with it.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0a big coffee fan so that\u2019s the first thing I have.\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0got a\u00a0pretty well-balanced\u00a0diet,\u00a0but\u00a0it\u2019s hard to beat a bacon and egg roll!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>Do\u00a0<\/b>you have any pre<\/b>–<\/b>event superstitions? Anything that you do before a big race?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OM:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>No,\u00a0I think\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0pretty lucky\u00a0that I grew up\u00a0running\u00a0and\u00a0that\u00a0I\u2019ve competed quite seriously since I was pretty young.\u00a0My biggest thing for an event is trying to make sure\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0relaxed and\u00a0calm and\u00a0have\u00a0the mindset that I\u2019m going to go out and do my best but also\u00a0more importantly\u00a0enjoy it.\u00a0As long as you\u2019ve done the checks\u00a0in terms of making sure\u00a0you\u2019ve got all of your equipment\u00a0and things like that, which you get into a routine of anyway,\u00a0it\u2019s mostly\u00a0about how you\u2019re feeling and what your heads like\u00a0on the morning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>Finally,<\/b>\u00a0what did you want to take away from the Bowral Classic this year?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OM:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I think the biggest thing I am looking forward to is\u00a0riding\u00a0with a group of guys that I ride Bowral with, and to get the best out of everyone as a whole group. We\u00a0try to start and finish together\u00a0and want everyone to get through the event as quickly as they can and\u00a0be proud of their result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BC:\u00a0<\/b>That\u2019s<\/b>\u00a0such a great approach, d<\/b>o you\u00a0<\/b>find you get<\/b>\u00a0a little bit competitive with each other? Or is it more just encourag<\/b>ing<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>each other?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

OM:<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Yeah\u00a0it is all\u00a0pretty encouraging, we may have a crack in some\u00a0of the different sections and if someone goes\u00a0ahead,\u00a0we just wait.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0much more enjoyable to finish and then have a beer at the end together knowing that everyone\u00a0had a good ride and really enjoyed it.\u00a0You know\u00a0I\u00a0think that\u2019s kind of the reason why we all go down and\u00a0why\u00a0we keep coming back to Bowral every year because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a beautiful ride, and we enjoy doing it together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
