One of the first things you notice when unboxing and holding Lazer\u2019s new Strada helmet is its similarities with the Sphere and genesis, the notably lighter weight, and lack of the now-familiar MIPS logo.<\/p>\n
Flip it over, look inside and the changes are even more apparent and intriguing \u2013 that inner MIPS cradle is missing and in its place is a unique criss-cross patterning on the inner shell.<\/p>\n

The first thing we did \u2013 and we suspect this will be the same for many \u2013 is to gently push and prod the raised sections inside the helmet to see how much they flex and move.<\/p>\n
A propriety replacement for the now infamous MIPS internal cradle system, Lazer say they have created the world\u2019s first fully integrated rotational-impact technology.<\/p>\n

The \u2019KinetiCore\u2019 crumple zones can be seen inside the helmet.
\nDubbed \u2018KinetiCore\u2019, the inner shell of the helmet incorporates \u2018Controlled Crumple Zones\u2019, basically smaller sections of the internal lining designed to absorb rotational impacts in much the same way the MIPS cradle system does.
\nThis main difference here is that the MIPS system is an add on \u2013 not just in weight but licensing fees to the owners of the \u2018Multi-directional Impact Protection System\u2019. <\/p>\n
With \u2018KinetiCore\u2019 being built-in and part of the helmet\u2019s core, it results in less weight and better ventilation. <\/p>\n
Lazer say they\u2019ve been working on the tech for more than a decade \u2013 the end result being a simpler, lighter helmet that boosts riders\u2019 protection, adds confidence and enjoyment in the saddle.<\/p>\n
To testing, and the helmet has been independently assessed by the Virginia Tech bicycle helmet rating where it received the maximum of five stars \u2013 the same as the MIPS system.<\/p>\n
The helmet is considerably lighter than its MIPS equipped predecessors due to no extra internal cradle being required.
\nUnwilling to crash a bike for Bicycling Australia, we are trusting Virginia Tech\u2019s safety findings, what we\u2019ll do is focus on fit, feel and how it rides.<\/p>\n
Put the helmet on and you\u2019ll notice that weight reduction and feel the light yet comfortable fit. Our test model pushed the kitchen scales to 280grams, considerably lighter than competing MIPS equipped offerings. <\/p>\n
