This year for the first time, Bowral-headquartered national charity Rare Cancers Australia (RCA) joins as an official charity partner for the Bowral Classic and the Noosa Classic.
RCA is looking to recruit riders to ‘ride4rare’ and is encouraging keen rusty cranks to register for the Classic events and fundraise to support the cause. Riders who join the ‘ride4rare’ team will have the opportunity to purchase a ‘rare’ jersey and will receive 15 per cent off their entry fee. Rare Cancers Australia is a charity whose purpose is to improve awareness, support and treatment of Australians with rare and less common (RLC) cancers. RCA was established in 2012 by Richard and Kate Vines after experiencing first-hand the challenges of a rare or less common cancer diagnosis and realising what little support and treatment options there was available to Australian patients.

Each year 52,000 Aussies are diagnosed and sadly 25,000 die. Rare Cancers Australia has supported thousands of patients and carers with practical and emotional support, advocacy, research and awareness raising. The charity is currently overwhelmed with a growing number of patients to support and needs further funding to support its great work.
Ride4Rare With Zac Hulm
Leading the ‘ride4rare’ team is Rare Cancers Australia’s Community Engagement Manager Zac Hulm. Zac is the current President of the Southern Highlands Cycling Club and has been working in the cycling space for 20 years and has raced competitively all over the country.
Rare Cancers Australia is new to the cycling arena and is keen to immerse itself in the cycling community and immerse itself at the head of the peloton.
As distinct from common cancers (breast, prostate, bowel, lung and melanoma) there is very little patient support offered to rare and less common cancer patients.
RLC cancers affect all ages and claim the lives of:
- One Australian child every four days;
- One Gen Y every day;
- 10 Gen Xs every day; and
- more Australians, aged 60-69, than any other cause of death
By definition ‘Less common’ are defined as those cancers with an incidence of between 6 and 12 (inclusive) per 100,000 Australians per annum and ‘Rare cancers’ are defined as those with an incidence of less than 6 per 100,000 Australians per annum. There are over 200 different types and rare and less common cancers and when you add the group together, it presents a significant number of people in the community whose lives are impacted.
