However, the course isn&#8217;t all coasting and enjoying the scenery. It will take training and determination to get to the finish line AND enjoy your afternoon at the Event Village.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re riding the 110km Challenge Classic or 170km Maxi Classic this article, co-written by Snowy Classic team member and rider &#8211; Harry Kooros will help you get prepared for your chosen ride.<\/p>\n<p>First things first.. the climbs!<\/p>\n<div class=\"cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong>Beloka<\/strong><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">After 85km of riding, it\u2019s time for the infamous Beloka climb. While it\u2019s only 3km long, it has an average gradient of 9.4% and gains over 280m of elevation. It took multiple Tour de France winner, Chris Froome, 11 minutes and 11 seconds to get up this climb in 2016, showing just how hard it is. Buckle up and prepare to be in the hurt box for approximately 20 minutes to get this hill out of the way! Make sure to fuel up once you\u2019ve summited this tough climb, as there is more climbing to come.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql o9v6fnle ii04i59q\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong>Thredbo River to Perisher\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">With over 110km in the legs, the climb from Thredbo River to Perisher is going to be a tough final challenge. Over the 23+km ascent, you\u2019ll climb 820m! That being said, the majority of the elevation gain (673m) will take place in the first 13km of the climb. As this is a relatively lengthy climb, it\u2019s vital that you ride well within your limits and settle into a manageable tempo.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingclassics.com.au\/snowy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/13484-SWC-map-170km-maxi-map-768x864.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-927\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><u>As someone who hasn\u2019t ridden the Snowy Classic looking at the course, what are your top training tips?<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><i>Train for hills<\/i> <\/strong>&#8211; Put plenty of climbs in your training rides running up to the Snowy Classic, as you\u2019ll climb over 3,000 meters of elevation on the day, and you want to come prepared. The first major climb, Beloka, doesn\u2019t come until about the middle of your ride, so you\u2019ll already have over 85km in the legs. It\u2019s a good idea to throw in some tough local climbs towards the end of your longer training rides, as this will help your body get ready for what\u2019s to come.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><i>Train for distance <\/i><\/strong>&#8211; If you\u2019re not yet throwing in a 100+km ride every week or two, you should start. While you may be able to pull off a 170km ride without training long distances, it\u2019s a really good idea to get some longer rides in prior to the event. This will help your body get used to long hours in the saddle, and it will help you build up your endurance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><i>Train within your limits<\/i> <\/strong>&#8211; You shouldn\u2019t just go out on each ride to go as fast as you can, you need to work on riding within limits that are sustainable for long distances. Find a tempo that you are comfortable sitting on for hours, and ride to it on some longer rides. Many people (myself included) go out too hard early in events, and then suffer greatly, sometimes even pulling out before finishing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><strong>Taper<\/strong> <\/i>&#8211; You should be tapering in the week prior to the event, allowing your body to recover from the training you\u2019ve been doing. I wouldn\u2019t recommend any long or hard rides in the final week before the event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingclassics.com.au\/snowy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2022\/02\/13484-SWC-map-170km-maxi-elevation-768x278.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-929\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0 auto;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b><u>What are you most looking forward to about the Snowy Classic as a rider?<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>There are three main things I\u2019m looking forward to about the Snowy Classic<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scenery<\/strong> &#8211; The scenery in the Snowy Mountains is absolutely incredible. You\u2019re going to want to bring your phone, as there are going to be some views that need to be photographed along the ride.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Route<\/strong> &#8211; The route, although challenging will be a lot of fun. There are some really enjoyable climbs, and I\u2019m excited to be riding on fully closed roads.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Atmosphere<\/strong> &#8211; Riding with countless like-minded people is always exciting. Events like these always highlight the camaraderie between cyclists of all abilities.
