With Singapore Airlines ‘Capital Express’ flights already connecting Canberra Airport with Singapore and New Zealand, Qatar Airways will soon add to the number of possible international travel destinations when the Middle Eastern carrier lands at the airport for the first time early next year.
A viable alternative to Sydney Airport for the population of the Southern Highlands, Canberra Airport, with its new modern terminal and affordable parking options, is less than a two-hour drive from Bowral.
While the drive might be 70km further to get to than Sydney Airport, the complete dual lane (and toll free) drive along the Hume and Federal Highways, which now links directly on to the new Majura Parkway duplication, virtually delivers passengers right to the front door of the terminal.
For the past nine months since its inaugural flight, Singapore Airlines has been offering passengers departing from Canberra Airport with 95 international connections throughout Asia and Europe via its Singapore Changi Airport hub. Additionally, the airline has taken its passengers across the Tasman to Wellington International Airport, which offers connections to 15 destinations throughout New Zealand.
For business travellers needing to fly to Singapore – one of the world’s great business hubs – international flights out of Canberra are a definite time saver. While the global city of Sydney does not have a true overnight business flight to Singapore, flying down to Canberra Airport at the end of the business day will see business travellers fly overnight to Singapore arriving fresh and ready for an 8.30am (local time) meeting.
With flights to Changi and Wellington currently operating four times weekly on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, Canberra Airport’s soon-to-be second international carrier, Qatar Airways, is due to fly its first service to the National Capital in February 2018.
Qatar has yet to announce its flight schedule to Canberra, but when it does the airline will connect the ACT and surrounding regions directly with Doha’s Hamad International Airport.
Canberra Airport, widely recognised as one of Australia’s most innovative and sustainable airports, sees around 2.8 million passengers pass through its terminal every year and is Australia’s eight busiest. Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Tigerair Australia and FlyPelican all offer regular services to and from Canberra Airport directly to 10 destinations.
From as far north as the Southern Highlands and Albury to the south, the people of the greater region can enjoy the convenience of international flights from Canberra without the need to go through Sydney.
