With the warmer weather slowly approaching, and the Bowral Classic marked on the calendar, it’s time to get prepped for an unforgettable ride. Here’s your go-to checklist to make sure your bike is in top shape for the big event.
Keep It Clean
A clean bike is a happy bike—and a reliable one! After your final training ride, give your bike a solid clean. Pay close attention to the frame, forks, fittings, pedals, and drivetrain. While you’re at it, inspect for any wear, cracks, or damage. Schwalbe’s natural bike soap and horsehair brush combo makes for a stellar clean!
Check Those Tyres & Brakes
Take a good look at both your front and rear tyres. Any wear, flat spots, or stray objects hiding in the treads? If so, it’s time for a tyre swap.
Don’t forget your brakes! Whether you’re rocking disc or rim brakes, check that the pads have plenty of life left and are wearing evenly. If they’re good to go, make sure they’re contacting the rim or disc correctly. And if you do replace them, double-check orientation—L or R markings on disc pads should match the correct side of the calliper. Also, check the rims for wear. If the wear indicator is gone, it’s time to replace the rim.
Inspect Your Chain
Your chain is the unsung hero of your ride! With an average lifespan of around 2,000km, it’s worth giving it a good clean and lube before a fondo. A fresh chain and a well-maintained groupset can make your ride smoother and more efficient with minimal friction.
Tighten Up Quick Release Skewers & Thru-Axles
Quick releases and thru-axles need regular attention. Make sure to clean around them when prepping your bike for the Bowral Classic. Dirt and grime can loosen them up, and you don’t want that happening on race day! Tighten the skewer or axle firmly and ensure the cam action is properly secured. A light dab of grease will keep things spinning smoothly.
Hex Bolts: Give ‘Em a Twist
Grab your trusty Allen keys and check all hex bolts on your bike. These little bolts can loosen over time, so make sure everything’s tight and in line with the manufacturer’s recommended settings.
Book in a Service
Last but not least, treat your bike to a professional check-up. Whether it’s a quick tune-up or a full service, a trained bike mechanic will spot any issues that might fly under your radar. Plus, there’s no better feeling than rolling up to the start line on a freshly serviced bike.
See you on October 20th!
