The Ultimate Road Trip – Sydney To Mudgee via Rylstone

If you’re making the trip from Sydney for this year’s Mudgee Classic, why not turn the drive into an adventure? Skip the usual route and take the scenic drive through Rylstone, a charming detour packed with history, stunning landscapes, and top-tier country hospitality,  it’s a  must for anyone visiting the region.

The district was settled in the 1820’s, making it one of the oldest settlements west of the Great Dividing Range. Rylstone’s charming 19th century photogenic buildings were constructed in the Victorian and Interwar period. With a wonderful streetscape of 19th century sandstone public houses, cottages, and government buildings and 1920’s era stores, it’s worth taking the time to wander the streets and capture its essence.

The town also acts as a gateway to the World Heritage-listed Wollemi National Park and the beautiful Bylong Valley, boasting some of the most spectacular natural heritage in the region. So nature-lovers, get your hiking boots on and explore the nearby wonders including Ganduddy and Ferntree Gully.

29 Nine 99 – This  restaurant is a favourite among locals and visitors with more than 30 types of dumplings, steamed buns and desserts to choose from.  Inside, the walls are decorated with original artworks, scarves, jewellery and traditional goods from China, all available to purchase.

The Country Plate – Specialises in small-batch locally made products.  From the best-selling “Rylstone Road” to the sought-after Date and Almond Chutney, their products are an experience to be savoured and treasured.

Cottage Museum – Housed in a simple 1890s weatherboard home the Cottage Museum collects, assesses and preserves objects relative to the early history of the district. The displays focus on domestic and rural life. They include costume, rustic furniture, kitchen and small farming tools, schooling and musical instruments.

Folkologie – Inspired by the regional lifestyle and a love of all things Australiana, at Folkologie you’ll discover a beautiful collection of carefully crafted furniture, home wares and gift lines.

Onward to Mudgee

From Rylstone, it’s a 45-minute cruise to Mudgee, winding past rolling vineyards and golden paddocks. Before you know it, you’ll be in the heart of wine country, ready to ride, sip, and explore.
