The Lazer Strada is not only a new helmet but also features integrated rotational impact technology as we see here.
One of the first things you notice when unboxing and holding Lazer’s new Strada helmet is its similarities with the Sphere and genesis, the notably lighter weight, and lack of the now-familiar MIPS logo.
Flip it over, look inside and the changes are even more apparent and intriguing – that inner MIPS cradle is missing and in its place is a unique criss-cross patterning on the inner shell.
The first thing we did – and we suspect this will be the same for many – is to gently push and prod the raised sections inside the helmet to see how much they flex and move.
A propriety replacement for the now infamous MIPS internal cradle system, Lazer say they have created the world’s first fully integrated rotational-impact technology.
The ’KinetiCore’ crumple zones can be seen inside the helmet.
Dubbed ‘KinetiCore’, the inner shell of the helmet incorporates ‘Controlled Crumple Zones’, basically smaller sections of the internal lining designed to absorb rotational impacts in much the same way the MIPS cradle system does.
This main difference here is that the MIPS system is an add on – not just in weight but licensing fees to the owners of the ‘Multi-directional Impact Protection System’.
With ‘KinetiCore’ being built-in and part of the helmet’s core, it results in less weight and better ventilation.
Lazer say they’ve been working on the tech for more than a decade – the end result being a simpler, lighter helmet that boosts riders’ protection, adds confidence and enjoyment in the saddle.
To testing, and the helmet has been independently assessed by the Virginia Tech bicycle helmet rating where it received the maximum of five stars – the same as the MIPS system.
The helmet is considerably lighter than its MIPS equipped predecessors due to no extra internal cradle being required.
Unwilling to crash a bike for Bicycling Australia, we are trusting Virginia Tech’s safety findings, what we’ll do is focus on fit, feel and how it rides.
Put the helmet on and you’ll notice that weight reduction and feel the light yet comfortable fit. Our test model pushed the kitchen scales to 280grams, considerably lighter than competing MIPS equipped offerings.
It feels secure on the head, sits well and is easily adjusted via rolling the rubber ‘ScrollSys’ endless belt to dial in desired tension. Below this innovative rear retention system you’ll see the helmet is also ponytail-friendly.
