From the very first Bowral Classic to the vineyards of Mudgee, Giles and Gareth have been there from the start. Both long-time ambassadors of The Classics, they’ve clocked up countless kilometres and collected more than a few unforgettable memories along the way. We caught up with them ahead of the 2025 Mudgee Classic to hear what makes this event so special.

How long have you been riding The Classics?
Giles: Since they first started with the Bowral 2016 event!
Gareth: I’ve been riding The Classics since the very first Bowral Classic too, and I’ve been an ambassador for all the Bowral, Mudgee and Snowy Classics to date.
What’s been your favourite event or year so far?
Giles: Mudgee is right up there for me—fast, flat(ish), and the scenery is cracking.
Gareth: Each of the “firsts” have been really special. There’s something memorable about being part of the very first edition of each Classic.
Which course are you riding this year, and why?
Giles: I’m signed up for the long course, but I might need to switch to the shorter one—I’m having a full hip replacement the month before the event!
Gareth: I’m doing the Maxi Classic. It means more Mudgee! 😄
How are you preparing for the Mudgee Classic? Got any training tips?
Giles: Riding every day—even if it’s just a commute—with a bit of gym work. That said, my April surgery might undo all that effort!
Gareth: I’ve been super consistent this year. I do a variety of bunch rides midweek and a long 100km+ ride most weekends. Going to the Tour Down Under in Adelaide was a great training kickstart!
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to first-time riders?
Giles: Find a club that welcomes all levels and start off riding in the park away from traffic.
Gareth: When you find a bunch at your pace, stick with it. Makes all the difference.
How do you celebrate post-ride?
Giles: A cold one at Three Tails Brewery—perfect way to re-hydrate.
Gareth: I like to celebrate before the ride! After the event, it’s back to Canberra and straight into work mode. But if I could stay in Mudgee I’d head to a winery or two.
Why should someone sign up for the Mudgee Classic if they’re on the fence?
Giles: It’s one of the more forgiving courses, and there’s loads to do in and around the area. There really is something for everyone.
Gareth: It’s a fantastic course—fast, fun, and beautiful. Plus, Mudgee is an amazing country town with great restaurants, wineries, and scenic spots to explore.
Inspired?
Take it from Giles and Gareth: whether it’s your first ride or your tenth, the Mudgee Classic offers more than just kilometres—it’s a weekend of community, challenge, and countryside charm.
