What Cyclists Need to Know About CTP Insurance in NSW

By Advantage Legal | Compensation Insider Series

Whether you’re commuting, training, or lining up for an event like the Mudgee Classic, sharing the road is an important part of every ride. And while we all hope for smooth, incident-free kilometres, it’s important for cyclists to understand what support is available if things don’t go to plan.

In New South Wales, the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance scheme provides a critical safety net for cyclists injured in motor vehicle accidents, regardless of who’s at fault.

CTP: Your Safety Net on the Road

The NSW CTP scheme, funded by every vehicle owner’s Green Slip, is designed to provide early financial and medical support to people injured in road accidents, including cyclists.

If you’re involved in an incident with a registered vehicle, you may be entitled to:

  • Coverage for medical and rehabilitation expenses
  • Weekly income support if you’re unable to work (subject to legislative caps)
  • Assistance with domestic or personal care

Importantly, under the scheme’s ‘no-fault’ period, these benefits are available for up to 52 weeks, even if you were partially or fully at fault.

What to Do After an Incident

If you’re involved in a crash, acting quickly can make a significant difference to your recovery and your claim:

  1. Report the incident to NSW Police and obtain an event number within 28 days
  2. Seek medical attention, even for minor injuries
  3. Identify the vehicle and insurer involved (if possible)
  4. Lodge your claim within 28 days to ensure full access to benefits

Strong evidence including photos, witness details, and even keeping an injury diary can also support your claim.

Know the Timeframes

There are critical deadlines that cyclists should be aware of:

  • 28 days to lodge your claim for backdated income support
  • 3 months as the general deadline to lodge a claim
  • 3 years to commence a damages claim in Court

Missing these timeframes can add additional administrative hurtles or significantly impact your entitlement to compensation.

Why Expert Advice Matters

While it’s possible to lodge a basic claim yourself, the CTP system can be complex, especially when injuries are serious or liability is disputed. Many errors in CTP claims are made right at the beginning, starting with the medical certificates and claim form.

Advantage Legal specialises in rehabilitation-focused compensation law, helping injured cyclists navigate the process, access the care they need, and maximise their compensation entitlements. Their team of Accredited Specialists in Personal Injury law are experts in cycling claims and fully appreciate the importance of getting an injured cyclist back on their bike fast as well as facilitating a general return to health, work and life.

Ride Prepared

Cycling is about freedom, challenge, and community, but being informed is big part of being prepared. Understanding your rights under the NSW CTP scheme means you can focus on what matters most: your recovery, your riding, and getting back out on the road.
